Traditionally, the katana was worn with the edge up in the belt (obi). This allowed for faster pulling and cutting. The oldest Japanese martial arts date back to the 15th century. It is characteristic of Kenjutsu and the martial arts that develop from it, such as Iaido and Aikido, that the blade is not struck vertically against a target, but rather the movement is carried out in a pulling-cutting manner.
